Casino Bonus FAQs

We receive a lot of questions about online casinos, casino holdem and bonuses. We thought it would be helpful to list those questions and our answers below.

Why do casinos offer bonuses?

Online casinos offer bonuses and other kinds of promotions for a number of reasons. Promos like deposit and reload bonuses are offered to get players to deposit money and play. Cash back offers and VIP programs are used to reward players for being loyal, which retains the player, as well as encourages them to play more.

With tens, if not hundreds of online casinos, they also need to offer something to draw players in.

Online casinos also have lower overhead costs compared to brick and mortar casinos, yet still manage to make millions of dollars. So they are able to pass some of that onto their customers.

What kinds of bonuses are there?

Casinos offer the following types of bonuses:

  • Deposit Bonuses – This offer is to get players to sign up and make a deposit.
  • Reload Bonuses – The reload promotion is to get players to come back and make (another) deposit and play. These are usually smaller than the deposit bonuses.
  • Match Bonuses – A match bonus is an offer from the casino to match so much of your deposit. For example, if the casino offers a 150% match up to $200, and you deposit $200, the casino will give you $300.
  • Instant Bonus – This is free money that the casino gives you just for creating an account. You don’t even need to make a deposit. These bonuses are smaller though – only $5 to $20.
  • High Roller Bonuses – These bonuses are aimed at players with large bankrolls. These bonuses are as much as $7500, $10,000 or mor.

How do clearing requirements work?

Clearing requirements are found in the terms and conditions of the each casino. They ask that you wager so many dollars, usually in the form of a multiple of your deposit or deposit plus bonus, before you can keep your bonus money (and withdraw it).

For example, say you wanted to participate in a 100% match bonus up to $1,000. You were going to deposit the entire $1k to receive $1k free, and the casino has a 30x play through on the deposit plus bonus. That would mean that you need to wager 30*$2,000, or $60,000.

Casinos put these terms and conditions in place to prevent players from abusing the system. They don’t want players to make a deposit, receive their bonus money (with no effort), only for them to cash out without playing any games.

Can I play casino holdem to clear bonuses?

That depends on the casino. Each casino will have different terms.

That said, I wouldn’t hold your breath. Most casinos we’ve found that are worth playing at do not allow you to play casino holdem to clear the bonus. As to why not, my guess is that it’s because casino holdem has a house edge of 2% (assuming optimal play). That’s not that big of an edge for the casino, so it’s possible (and even likely) that you’ll earn money in the short run playing casino holdem, all the while earning a free money bonus.

How much money can I get from casino bonuses?

That depends, too. If you sign-up to casino “A” then you might be able to get $500, but if you go to casino “B” then you might be able to get $250. Casino “C” might be offering a $5,000 offer, too.

It varies a lot. Many casinos change their promos often, too.

Another thing to keep in mind – you can play at multiple casinos and take advantage of more than one offer. In other words, there isn’t a whole lot standing in your way from signing up to casino “A” and finishing up that offer, then going to casino “B” for that offer and then ending up at casino “C” for the $5k offer.

So to the answer question – you can get as little as $20 from a bonus and well over $25,000 if you were willing to sign-up to multiple casinos and can deposit the full amount of money needed to take advantage of the entire promotion.

Should I go for the biggest deposit bonus?

No. Not always, at least. There are a couple of other things to consider first.

First off, how big is the percentages of all the bonuses you’re considering? For example, a 150% match bonus up to $1,000 is much better than a 100% bonus up to $1300. Every dollar you spend goes 50% further.

Also, bigger bonuses will need to be cleared. Because of their size they’ll take much longer to clear. Can you spend that much money to do it? Can you do it in the timeframe the casino gives you (the expiration date)? Is it even worth it?

You also have to ask if you even have the resources to take advantage of the entire bonus. In other words, it doesn’t make much sense to sign-up to a casino for a 100% up to $5,000 bonus if you only have $1,000 to spend. You’re better off finding a casino with a $1,000 bonus offer, and once you’re finished with that, switching to the casino with the $5k offer so that you can earn more free money than you wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.

Do bonuses affect the other promotions I can participate in?

That depends on the casino. Sometimes if there are multiple deposit bonus offers you’ll only be able to participate in one of them. For example, you couldn’t have both an instant bonus and deposit bonus offer. Some casinos, like the one at 5 Dimes, will let you have the cash back, VIP or deposit bonus – they won’t let you have all 3. So it will just depend on where you play. Just be sure to read the terms and conditions before signing up and all that information will be laid out for you. We also cover these details to the best of our ability in our casino holdem reviews.
